Testimonials of Cursillo Participants

Testimonials

Many who attend a Cursillo are eager to share their experience with others. Here is a sampling of some of the comments offered by members of various churches who have attended Houston Presbyterian Cursillo weekends.

I attended Cursillo…at Texas Baptist Encampment in Palacios.… It was a wonderful experience with lasting effects…. One of the things that I was made aware of…is the wonderful Christian community we have available to us through our faith.  Once you have been to Cursillo, that opens up in ways that you may not have been aware of.  We don’t have to “put out into the deep” alone, we have a whole community that is with us.  The Cursillo experience goes on long after you come home.  I look forward to the day when I see a long list of Pines members who have been to Cursillo. - Steve Wiens, HPC 28

I was skeptical—I had heard tremendous things about Houston Presbyterian Cursillo and didn’t believe it could possibly be as friends described.  I went—not knowing what to expect and yet open to whatever was going to happen. After all, three days at Camp Allen in the woods, in itself, was a welcome idea to me.  And I received—from a total immersion in community, music, love, praise, prayer, and grace that took me farther than I had ever expected to grow.  A meaningful step on your faith journey awaits you, as well, at Cursillo. - Elizabeth Jeter, HPC 3

Describe Cursillo?  Totally impossible – it must be experienced, and what an awesome experience. Living in the Love of God. - Weldon Rogers, HPC 22

Cursillo was a spa for my mind and spirit that will last a lifetime and can be shared with others…. Cursillo was a life-changing event for me. I wouldn’t want anyone to miss out on an opportunity like I had. - Linda Kotch, HPC 20

The Cursillo experience was for me a glimpse of what it could mean to be a Christian community.  It provided space and place for the reality of God's amazing love to be felt in my life.  For just a little while there was nothing to do but receive love; enough that it cannot help but spill out of my life onto everyone else I meet.  This is what I thought Christianity was about as a child, and it was joyful to experience it again as an adult.  I pray that the beauty of that weekend will forever transform my life. - Helen DeLeon, HPC 22

Attending Cursillo brings about a tremendous excitement about the joys of Christian life and leaves one on a spiritual “high”….What a great way to keep the batteries charged and maintain a relationship with like-minded Christians! - George Uthlaut, HPC 16

Let me tell you some of the ways God is at work through Presbyterian Cursillo:  You will experience the love of God and God’s hand upon your life as never before.  You will be richly blessed by the new friends, fellow brothers and sisters of Christ, that you will meet.  You will come face to face with the joy that Christian life is all about!  You will be encouraged by heartfelt testimonies about how God is powerfully at work all around us.  You will do a lot of singing, listening, laughing, talking, eating (great food!), and receiving kisses from God. There’s so much more to say, but I’ll just end with this: GO!…. Craig and I were richly blessed by Cursillo this weekend. Now it’s your turn! This isn’t just another retreat; it’s a life changing adventure. Sign up soon! - Gena Kooken, HPC 20

God called me to step out in faith to experience the last Cursillo weekend. I believe every person who attends Cursillo returns with the “Wows” and “Ahas” God intended him or her to receive…. I was able to experience the all-encompassing love of Jesus Christ as He manifests Himself in His people through love and service! I encourage you to experience Cursillo for yourself and gain the “Wows” and “Ahas” God has for you! - Lynn D’Antoni, HPC 25

Initially, participating in a Cursillo was not my idea - the idea was introduced to me by my mother and my wife.… I was having difficulty with a work situation that would possibly interfere with my ability to go, and Tindy was beginning to feel that "it's just not the right time to do this.…” However, the time to go came, and we went…. I am really glad that we did attend…together: on the way back to Houston, we were able to share the overwhelming, overflowing experience of God's love that we had been shown.  Wow, what a weekend!…[T]he Cusillo experience…should be pursued with vigor;…you will experience God's love for you in ways you never would have dreamed of…. Truly, it was an awesome, uplifting weekend. - Jeff Youngflesh, HPC 15

One of my favorite Bible verses is John 4:10, where Jesus says to the Samaritan woman at the well, “Woman, if you but knew the gifts of God!”. . . . One of the greatest gifts that God has given me was the experience of a Cursillo weekend.  The Cursillo experience is a joy-filled three-day retreat that takes place at beautiful Camp Allen….  There is nothing magical about Cursillo, but it is a way to experience God’s love in a new way.  It’s a time when the world can stop spinning around for a moment, and a time to realize that God is good. . .all the time! It’s an opportunity to still one’s heart and mind from outside pressures and submit to the Holy Spirit as He works in our lives. And. . .it is so much fun!! For me, it was a life-changing gift for which I am grateful. - Judye Hartman, HPC 6

I heard about this four day experience called Cursillo for two years.…Lynda  and I would casually discuss this “experience” we heard from others….I would pick up brochures explaining registrations for the next Cursillo weekend, read instructions how to register, then walk away. August 2003, I…picked up another brochure…. This time I kept the brochure, discussed it with Lynda and registered on-line…. We lived  “the experience” from Thursday afternoon to Sunday afternoon. The presence of the Lord and His son, Jesus Christ, grabs you in such a way you cannot and will not let go of their love for you…. Experience this community of faith from eyes that are opened wider. - Bob Barr, HPC 28

In the Christian experience, Cursillo is in a category of its own. If you could fast-forward the Christian Life, stopping only for the high points and somehow jam all that into one weekend, Cursillo would be the result. While the weekend slowly unfolds, internal walls fortified by ego and self-consciousness melt away. Its healing effect on each of us was as unique as the needs of the individuals present…. If this isn’t a little slice of heaven, it’s at least the perfect lab experiment for what God intends the Christian community to be on earth. We are often told how to live the abundant life as Christians, but this weekend it wasn’t just spoken, it was revealed.  Christ was made evident through seeing, hearing, touching and yes, tasting. And just as in life, you never know what’s going to happen next! - Cindy Gabriel, HPC 21

Bonnie…and I attended HPC 27.… “Amazing grace” reigned over my soul, felt in my heart and all parts of my body. I am so thankful that I would gladly share some highlights of my experiences, even though it is not my forte…. I want to give and share what I felt, so I pray: “Holy Spirit, you began to drizzle on me, please come down more and drench me, and work through me”…. I would like to dedicate this brief humble article to all who prayed for me, welcomed me, tolerated me, and especially all the loving staff…that showed me true “servant leadership” in every sense of the word…. I cannot wait to emulate you. - D. Yup Kim, HPC 27

You may be wondering, “What is this Cursillo thing I keep hearing about?”  It’s hard to describe, but I’ll do my best.  Cursillo is a three-day weekend in which the participants are surrounded by God’s undying love.  Through the servant-hood of others, Jesus Christ is revealed to each and every person there.  It’s a weekend filled with worshiping, singing His praises, and having others serve you in the name of Jesus Christ.  God’s love is very present! - Kim Hock, HPC 3
